About Us

Our Mission

The Food Forward Initiative is a change-maker project rooted in sustainability and social responsibility. Our mission is to ensure that no edible food goes to waste by repurposing food waste and surplus food from the UC Berkeley campus to benefit the community.

Who We Are

We are a dedicated team of summer student changemakers, who are passionate about making a positive impact. By collaborating with local organizations, we strive to create a more sustainable and equitable food system.

What We Do

Food Waste Management

We collect used food waste from the campus and redirect it to a community garden. Here, it is composted to enrich the soil, supporting local urban agriculture and reducing landfill usage.

Food Redistribution

Unused food from the campus is channeled to homeless shelters and food banks, providing nutritious meals to those in need and helping to alleviate food insecurity.

Why It Matters

Every year, significant amounts of food are wasted, contributing to environmental degradation and missed opportunities to feed those in need. By addressing these issues, the Food Forward Initiative not only supports environmental sustainability but also fosters a sense of community and social justice.

Get Involved

Join us in making a difference! Whether you're a student, faculty member, or community resident, there are many ways to get involved with the Food Forward Initiative. From volunteering in the community garden to helping with food collection and distribution, your participation is invaluable.
